Carnivorous Pitcher Plant

Bugs are attracted to the smell inside these pitcher plants.  They get trapped inside, and the liquid breaks down their bodies and the plant absorbs the nutrients from the bugs!

My container garden has begun!  Hopefully more successful this year, and less jungly.  We shall see how everything holds up.  These are a few shots I took on my way out the door today.  Hopefully some more artful shots soon.

Pelican Flower

This is a pelican flower that was in the green house at Wellesley College.  Apparently it is supposed to look like a piece of meat... it attracts flies.  The flies land on it, and realize it isn't meat, but they do collect the pollen.  Clever way to try to pollinate!

Yet another sign of spring.  The chairs are out in Harvard Yard.  It was a little rainy today to sit in them, but I love how the colors look against the green grass!

Newest science glassware added to the Hinterkins household.  Jennie got it from a co-worker.  Thanks Jen!  Andy loves it.
