The Fever!
I've got the fever.. that is for historical fiction. One of my next reading groups will be reading this book. I couldn't put it down. I'm going to read the "American Plague" for some more background. Yes... this is my life... the yellow fever!

The Burn
Every spring the Schrumms have a big brush fire at the Cape. Here's a few of my favorite pictures of the fire. My pyromaniac side shows huh?

Groundwork Somerville Gala
That means that Jennie breaks out the "hooker shoes" that Andy wouldn't allow her to wear at our wedding. She even glammed it up with a HUGE ring! Great night, good fundraiser, good people.

Snow and Birds
These birds were hanging out all day on the field next to my school. I'm not sure why they were there, but maybe they were freaked out that it was snowing again!

It seems that the past six weeks or so have been so hectic. I think we've been out of town for 5 out of those 6 weeks. So it was really nice to have a nice quiet pancake breakfast this morning. Andy was not willing to smile for this shot. But I was so glad he made breakfast for us. Yum.

A beautiful view
After a week of eating poorly, and exercising very little, I went for a walk with Jennie and Charlotte. We walked from her house down around the Charles, over to Andy's work, and back to Jennie's house. About 4 miles according to JCP. This was our view. Grammy would have thought it was beautiful. And she would have been so proud of us for going on such a long walk.

One funny moment.
Last night we went to a bar to celebrate Frank's birthday, and to also celebrate the life of my Grammy, Louise Paul Carey. It was a rather subdued evening. But we did have one really good laugh. The waiter brought over Andy's Buffalo chicken sandwich. It had a cup of bleu cheese dressing on the side, which was knocked over INTO my purse.
Jennie promptly requested a free dessert, (which we enjoyed... mmm brownie sundae). We managed to get all the dressing (with chunks of cheese) out of my purse. Later on in the evening I noticed this white ball of glop on the table. We realized that it was "purse cheese". Ewww... at least we all had a good chuckle about it.

If you look close enough, you can see snowflakes. Today a few flurries came down in the afternoon. One of my students said, "Hey everyone it's a snowstorm!" The response? A collective groooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan.
We want warm spring weather!

This log has been resting on our beach for a few years now. I love how it is an old weathered piece of life. It is nestled into the sand, and is a great place to plop down and have a seat to watch the ocean. It is sitting upon a wash of purple sand. This sand has a very high iron content. When we were little Grampy would let us use his magnets and drag them through the sand to collect all the iron.
We went for a walk on the beach today after we visited Grammy in the hospital. We are putting her into hospice care. We don't know how long she has to live, but know that she is ready to die. She made that very clear to us all. I couldn't help but think back to the memories I have of her on this beach. She used to watch us swim, build sand castles, and catch "beach bugs". We could always rely on her to share a handful of "wheat nuts", and to teach us how to make a great pie crust. She is 94 years old. On April 18th she will turn 95 years old. She has had a long and happy life. I just hope that these last few days (hopefully not weeks) will be as comfortable and peaceful as possible.

When we went to visit Grammy at the hospital on Saturday,
we walked past this picture of the Brewster flats.

After a gray day of rain and clouds... and bad news about Grammy's health, I dashed home to pack up the car to hit the road for CT. The sun came out, and left this beautiful piece of sky. I took it as a sign that whatever happened, it was going to be okay.

Candlelit dinner. Not for the romance either. We had a power outage for about 45 minutes... so we ate our dinner by candle light!

68/365 Epic Brass March 9, 2011
Today was an assembly day! The group Epic Brass came to my school. The kids got a great dose of brass music. The guys were entertaining, and quite talented. The kids had a ball, and so did I!

67/365 Book Fair Tuesday March 8, 2011
The Scholastic Book Fair is here. You should have seen how excited my kids were! They were actually yelling. I'm so glad that books can still excite ten-year-olds. It is also a great time for me to get some books myself. The families in my class are very generous, and have given me several books from my wish list. I just wish I had time to read all the novels they've given me!
Hooray for books!

Sugaring by day
Wood-fired boiler built by Somerville High School kids in 2006.
I'm really impressed by the Groundworks group. Who knew that the city of Somerville would be making maple syrup? Syrup in the city... oh my.

Maple Syrup Fire!
Becca is a member of the Groundwork Somerville environmental group. One project they do is make maple syrup. In conjunction with Tufts green team, they reach out to second graders in the Somerville public schools and teach them about maple sugaring. This weekend was the big culmination where they boiled the sap to create the syrup. They boiled all day long on Friday and Saturday. They had a few hundred gallons of sap that was boiled down. I'm not sure how much they ended up with, but will sell it at the farmer's market!
Friday night we went to the fire and hung out with some of the organizers. Tai Dinnan is one of the organizers, and her parents were here helping because they are pros at making syrup. The funniest part was that Terry, Tai's dad grew up in Cheshire and graduated in the class between Mr. and Mrs. Schrumm! It was a night of crazy coincidences... and a maple sugar education!
One of the many 5 gallon buckets of sap that was boiled.
Upper tray where sap is held before it is boiled.

60/365 Visitor
Michelle and Ken came over for dinner tonight. They brought little Aida! I forgot to snap a picture of her until she was bundled up and on her way out the door! They are great parents.
