Maple Syrup Fire!
Becca is a member of the Groundwork Somerville environmental group. One project they do is make maple syrup. In conjunction with Tufts green team, they reach out to second graders in the Somerville public schools and teach them about maple sugaring. This weekend was the big culmination where they boiled the sap to create the syrup. They boiled all day long on Friday and Saturday. They had a few hundred gallons of sap that was boiled down. I'm not sure how much they ended up with, but will sell it at the farmer's market!
Friday night we went to the fire and hung out with some of the organizers. Tai Dinnan is one of the organizers, and her parents were here helping because they are pros at making syrup. The funniest part was that Terry, Tai's dad grew up in Cheshire and graduated in the class between Mr. and Mrs. Schrumm! It was a night of crazy coincidences... and a maple sugar education!
