268/365 Sunday September 25, 2011

I'm finally caught up!  Keeping up with this blog has been tricky lately.  But since I have the morning to myself today (Andy is at work on a Sunday... bummer), I have time to catch up on the blog.  Yesterday I made two of mom's cakes.  The one in the last post, and this one.  This one looks better, but I'm not sure how it'll taste.  It may have double the baking powder.  Or it might have just the right amount, and have been over mixed!

I asked Carolynn what happens if there is too much powder here's what she said:
Sometimes it won't matter, sometimes it will rise too much and then collapse, sometimes it will just be a little lighter.  Let me know what happens.

Usually with powder it's not as bug a deal as soda...

It is in the freezer for another time.  We shall see how it goes when we eventually eat it.

In other apple related news... I made a delicious apple cake from mom's recipe yesterday.  I didn't give it enough time to cool and ended up with what mom would call a "cake quake"!  Everyone says it tastes good still!

The "fruits" of my labor.  All day in the kitchen on my feet. 7 jars of apple sauce.  Delish!

265/365

You can't really can stuff without this cool doohickey.  It is a jar lifter.  (It is a purchase I'm really glad I made a while ago!)

264/365

Once the jars and lids boiled, I added the sauce, covered them up and boiled them again.  Magically the boiling process vacuum seals it all in!  So the sauce doesn't need to be refrigerated (in our new fridge that actually has room for it but alas I canned this stuff anyway!).

Onto the next part of the process.  Canning!  This is something that Karla taught me a few years ago before she moved to New Mexico.  The first part is sterilization of the jars and lids.  You boil the crap out of them!

The dishes started to pile!

Food mill to sauce... and added cinnamon and sugar!

259/365

Ahhh... The Foley Food Mill.  It seems so many people of my generation don't know what it is!  Jennie and I learned from Mom how to make applesauce. This is really the only way to do it if you are a Perkins.  I was glad to hear that my friends Meghan and Bridget each had one and use the same process for sauce!

Apples all steamed up, ready to go into the food mill.

They also got us a new refrigerator!!!

Our old one was very old, and had some weird condensation issues.  Also the bars that were holding stuff onto the doors were falling off all the time.  This one has a freezer on the bottom and double doors on the top.  It is HUGE!  But it says it will only cost $50 a year to run.  I wonder what the old one from the 80's cost us each year?

I came home the other day and the jungle that was our "yard" was gone!  Apparently our landlord realized that it was out of control.  Jennie almost walked right by our place.  She keeps saying that it looks like we've moved!  This is only one of the house improvements as of late!

Today we got a new TV stand.  Andy worked for an hour and a half putting it together.  It is awesome!  So much better than the last one... the nesting has begun!

This is a REALLY cool beer poster that Matt and Laurie just gave us for our wedding.  I love the graphic organization of our favorite beverage!

I went apple picking with Jennie, Bridget, Meghan, Miranda, and wee Susannah the other day.  Apple crisp is in our future!

So, the other day I was walking Jennie's dog Charlotte over to Paula's for Pizza Night.  We decided to walk up towards Summer Street instead of Elm Street because it is prettier.  As soon as we got off our porch onto the street we saw a neighbor of ours (who is normally a sweet old man who hangs out with his grandkids on the front stoop).. in his UNDERWEAR, yelling at a little Chihuahua.  I averted my eyes, because old man tighty whities are not my thing.

We soon passed him, and were greeted by a woman apparently walking her little miniature Pincher off leash.  Now I walk Charlotte a lot, but I never know what other dogs who greet her will act like so I was a little hesitant.  The Pincher greeted her, both tails were wagging, and then he growled at her, and made to bite her (which he didn't)... I looked up and the woman had crossed the street.  Apparently not her dog.  So I started yelling NO, BAD DOG, GO HOME to the Pincher.  I almost had  to pick Charlotte up, but gladly he stayed about 10 feet away as soon as we started moving.

So I rounded the corner, turning around every 20 seconds or so to yell at the dumb dog following us.  Then Charlotte decided it was time to poo.  Of course... put yourself in a vulnerable situation ready for an attack Char!

So keeping my eye on the dog, I bent down to take care of her business, and all of a sudden a horrible screeching noise came down the road.  A little old lady was driving her car with one wheel locked.  It screeched slowly down the street and left a burnt rubber smell and a mark on the road.  I saw another person walking and we were both dumbfounded.

With this new noisy distraction, it was time to cross the street and escape the nasty little dog who was following us.  I was thinking what a weird walk this was.  Then about half way down the hill to Paula's, I stopped suddenly because there was a TURKEY walking down the road!

Below is the video of my friend the turkey:

I'd say that was the weirdest 15 minute walk I've ever had.  Life never gets dull in Somerville!
