Another shot from last weekend.
We even threw ice chunks and rocks to try and break the ice.  It was a beautiful day.

Another photo from our ice adventures on the Cape last weekend.

I think I need to give Andy credit for this photo.  I think he took it, but I can't remember.  I really like the way the light is shining through the ice like it is a natural (albeit cold) window.  Thanks for modeling Bec!

Homer and Rufus make new best friends!

Saturday night we had dinner with the Gells.  Jared almost took our dogs home with him!  A great night visiting, and we are so glad that Jared and Betsy didn't move THAT far away!  Thanks to Carolynn's spice rub, and Trae's advice, Andy made a mean set of ribs.  Yummy dinner and good friends.

And he says he doesn't even LIKE dogs!

Granted... I did invite Rufus over to be in the picture, so this was partly staged.  Homer was cuddled between us on the couch and spread out when I went to grab my phone to take a photo.

Apparently the dogs are now allowed on the couch, which is news to me.  Gram informed me that they are allowed on the furniture.  Really Mom?  You and Dad are becoming softies!

As promised a shot from the icy beach of Cape Cod in February!

54/365 Wednesday, February 23, 2011

The other day I wrote about my love of light.  One of the most unique gifts Andy and I received for our wedding is the glass sun catcher piece above.  The entire Schrumm family gave it to us.  Rebecca saw it in a local Somerville Artist's shop and thought of us.  It is perfect.  It fits Andy's decorative style, and catches light that I find so necessary to life.

It hangs in our kitchen window right above the sink.  Many a morning Andy and I sip our coffee to the lovely reflective glow of the light.  It feels great especially on cold winter mornings... giving us a hint of spring.

And perhaps a reminder of the several rainbows we've seen in the last few years.

I have this theory that the rainbows we have seen over the past few years are messages that Jan is sending us.  There was one the afternoon that she died.  I believe it was her telling us that everything is okay.  There were three on our trip to Ireland... and I think that even though she was in the hospital, it was her being on that great trip with us in spirit.  And again in Hawaii on our honeymoon, the day that we saw lava pouring into the ocean, we also witnessed a beautiful rainbow while we were surrounded by a pod of Dolphins.  Oh yes, Jan has something to do with this.

So thank you to the science of prisms,
and to the Schrumms for such a lovely gift,
and to Jan,
for the quiet reminders that life is good.

Introducing Calvin James Daly

We had dinner with Nicole and Andrew.... and Cal.  They are great parents already!  And look... he is soooo small in comparison to Andrew!!  Welcome to the world first pizza baby!

Finished!

No more wallpaper!

51/365 February 20, 2011

It took the entire weekend, but we got it done.  It was a mixture of peeling, scraping, balancing and reaching on ladders, and wetting it down with special goo.  I fought my fear of heights by balancing on a ladder up to the ceiling.

We made a MESS!

But we did take a break and we went to the beach.  I'll post more of those pictures soon.

50/365 February 19, 2011

This weekend at the Cape, the ladies tackled the dubious job of striping wallpaper in the stairwell.  Rebecca and I became obsessed with peeling the paper off the walls.

Crazy Sock Day!

Friday was crazy sock day in my classroom.  One of my students asked if we could have  a day for crazy socks, and I thought, why not?  I participated fully.  I wore one sock each from four different pairs of socks.  Needless to say... I got some good comments!

Free Movie Day!

Frank gets free movie tickets all the time.  Frank, Bec, Andy, Jeff, and I went to a pre-screening of "Hall Pass" Thursday night.  It was very funny.  The guys who directed it actually did a question and answer session after the movie!  They are the Farrelly brothers.  They did "Something About Mary" and "Dumb and Dumber".  They were hilarious, and it was fascinating to hear what they had to say about making funny movies.

The picture isn't very good because it was from my phone and in the darkish theatre.  But we saw famous movie directors!

Ick!  This piece of ice was filthy!

46/365 February 15, 2011 Science!

Science!!!

The other day Andy was putzing around the house and asked me about the beakers we had left over from our wedding.  (They are all over the place!)  This is what he came up with:

He filled it with snow... I snapped this picture a few hours after he brought it in, and it had begun to melt.  He was really curious about how much the snow would melt.  We started with 900 ml.

Now we have:

About 350 (with a little evaporation from a day or two on the counter!)

I love that we have science going on in our house!
We'll have to come up with some other experiments to keep these beakers in use.

45/365 February 14, 2011 Best Valentine Ever

I have always disliked Valentine's Day.  It probably stems from my many years of singledom... But it still isn't my favorite.  I think that Andy is pretty relieved.  So many guys have so much pressure on them to make it such a special day.  But I think it is really a ploy for people to spend lots of money.  I don't need overpriced flowers and an expensive dinner... But what Andy sent me this year was just perfect!

I got the best valentine's card ever!  Andy used to work with a chic named Liz Prince.  She is a comic book artist.  She does this special thing... She buys the cheapest, cheesiest 99cent card at the store, and customizes it.

I love that the little horse is farting hearts!  That is where love comes from in the Hinterkins household!

Check out Liz's artwork.

Nothing beats Valentine's ickyness better than fart jokes and comics!

44/365 Sunday, February 13, 2011

We went home to CT to visit and Maria was in town.  We went down to the beach for a walk in the snow. It was pretty incredible.  Andy took all these photos.  He got some great shots of the fam, the snow, and I especially like the photo of the phragmites.  Even though they are invasive, this is a beautiful shot of them.

It was great seeing Maria, Andrew and Leslie too.  We missed having them during Christmas due to the snow, so we were glad to have a chance for us all to be together!  Good food.  Good family.  And of course good dogs!

43/365 Saturday, February 12, 2011 LIVAHHHHHHHH

Love Your Liver!

Today Jennie, Andy, Carolynn, Annette, Meg, and I and a ton of other people volunteered at the Love Your Liver 17 miler.  We gave water and gatorade to the 250 + runners in training for the Boston Marathon.  We were so glad to help out.  Andy and I ran with this team for a few years, and it feels so great to support our team!

And the love was spread some more because this lovely lady got engaged at the end of the run!  John proposed to Sheri just as she finished her 17 miles!  Congrats kids!

The 100th Day of School!

Not a big deal for fifth graders... but the little kiddos love it.  My school goes all out with the decorations!

Report Cards UGH!

I've been glued to the computer obsessing about report cards all week.

And they are finished!  Signed, sealed... and will be delivered tomorrow!

40/365 Wednesday, February 9, 2011

Today I got to visit with Miss Aida B.!  Michelle and Ken had this lovely little girl this December.    For the past three weeks Michelle and I have been trying to make a date to hang out.  Unfortunately every Wednesday for three weeks it has been snowing.  With our streets being so packed with snow, parking isn't easy... and we've had parking bans for weeks on the nights I was going to visit Michelle.   Anyway, I was so glad to get the chance for my second visit with Aida.

She's such a cutie.  (And I don't like babies!)  I also had a wonderful visit with Michelle.  It is always great to spend an evening with an old friend. (And another night of wonderful cooking too.) AND Michelle got me to eat brussels sprouts!  They were actually good!  Veg, and a great visit.  Today was a great day.

39/365- Carolynn's cooking! Tuesday, February 8, 2011

Sheri and Carolynn and I try to get together about once a month to do dinner and gossip.  Last night we visited Carolynn's new condo and she treated us to her famous carbonara!  It is to die for!  I wish I had brought my good camera to get a better picture... but it is yummy!  And even better is the company.  Thanks for a great dinner ladies!

38/365 "Best Wedding Gift Ever"

Or that is what Andy claims!  I think it was a hilarious gift!  Inside are Star Wars cookie cutters.  I'm sure the next time I make the cookies I'll blog about it.  This was a gift from our friend Sarah (RARS).  She also gave us a thoughtful picture and frame, as well as a lovely tapestry that she got for us at a market in Pakistan.  But you've gotta love the lunchbox!

37/365 mardis gras?

So I know that Mardis Gras is coming up... (Tuesday March 8th)  But our neighbor has been celebrating all year it seems... he often has these beads hung around our yard.  The weathervane... okay... but the beads?  At least it is colorful!

36/365 - Manicures!

Today we were visiting in Rochester.  Jennie came along and gave Sofia and me each a manicure!  Here's Sof's ... doesn't she look amazing?

The highlight of the manicure was that the color was the same that we wore for our wedding!

35/365 - Ice

Our latest storm left Wellesley in a winter wonderland of ice.  I love how the sun was making the trees just glisten!  And I'm still loving winter.  It seems that everyone in New England is hating the amount of snow and winter weather we've had.  I'm still loving it!

34/365 February 3, 2011

Thursday, the 3rd was Jan's birthday.  Andy saw that Somerville High School was putting on the musical of Willy Wonka.  He thought this would be a great way to honor Jan's memory because it is something she would have done, and it would be a way for us to support our community.  So Bec, Frank, Jennie, Andy, Sheri, and John and I all went.  It was terrible.  But fun, and we were glad to go.  Then we went to Highland Kitchen for a lovely dinner.  An entertaining evening to say the least.

So many people are complaining about all the snow we have.  But I'm glad not everyone is being a scrooge. Take a look at this snowman taking a nap!

32/365 Disco!

How many of you have a disco ball hanging in your yard?  Not many?  Well we do!  Yes, our stoner neighbor (the 50 something bike messenger) has an eclectic sense of taste.  Last summer the disco ball appeared hanging in the grape arbor of our house.  Interesting to say the least.

But he is a really nice guy.  This summer on my birthday I ran into him as I was watering my flowers and he wished me a happy birthday.  That evening when he came home he brought me a topsy turvy tomato hanger.  He was so sweet to do that!

Anyway, you never know what he is going to decorate the lawn with next.  Sometimes there's pictures out there.  Sometimes pinwheels.  I assume that over this next year I'll be posting more pictures of these amusing decorations.
