31/365 I really don't know...

whose socks I'm wearing!  I put them on this morning noticing the purples... and I assumed they were my Alaska socks that Jan gave me a few years ago. (they are pretty with the Northern lights on them) Then I went to put on my shoes and I thought... I don't have socks with just stars on them do I?

So here are the possibilities:
1. These are Jennie's or Becky's socks that got left behind in our house somewhere.
2. They are socks that got caught up in the laundry from one of the other people in my apartment building.
3. I got a gift from the sock fairy that I was unaware of.

OR:

4.  These are my socks and I just am an idiot.

Here's what I do know.

- They were in my sock drawer, so they must be clean.
- They are cute.

So... I wore them anyway!

Is it possible I got them in my stocking for Christmas and have forgotten already?

I must be losing my mind.

30/365- room with a view

We've been living here in our apartment for almost a year and a half.  It is a great place.  We have two large bedrooms, a big kitchen with lots of cabinets for storage.  An eight minute walk to the T.  Lydia's grocery store just down this hill.  Bec and Frank are an 8 minute walk away.  It is a great place.

Our apartment does have some funny things about it however...  Our walls are covered in plaster... I actually have a love for our "stucco" walls (they are a great conversation piece).  We are quite familiar with Amy Weinhouse's music  (sung by our neighbor, the fifty-something bike messenger who decorates our side yard really weirdly... more on that another time).   And yes, we do smell the weed when he is smoking up.  It comes right through the floors!

But there is one thing that I see every day that is also strange.  From "my" seat on the couch you can look out to see the tops of the neighbor's houses.  And of course the telephone pole that has about a million wires connected to it.  We do live in Somerville, at one time the most dense population per square mile in the country.  Needless to say there are lots of people who live here in multi-family homes, all squished together.

But the funny thing about this view is the two pairs of sneakers hanging on the wires.  For about a year there was one pair.  Now a few months ago a second pair arrived on the wire.  I remember that in the 80's or maybe still today that it meant that there was a crack house around.  Now I'm not so sure that there is a crack house in our neighborhood... but you never do know.   This is not the first time I've seen this in a neighborhood I've lived in.  And I do feel that we live in a safe neighborhood.  But it got me thinking and I decided to google it.  It turns out that there are many theories about the shoes tossed over power lines.  The crack house theory was at the top of the list... as well as heroin, or gang violence.  But there were many other more benign reasons... a right of passage, end of school, a forthcoming marriage, or even as a celebration when someone gets out of bootcamp.  And of course just a silly prank that kids play.  For more info check out wikipedia.

I prefer to think of it as a silly thing in our neighborhood.  I do wish I could cut them down.  But I just don't know how.  It is really funny looking when they have snow built up on them when there is a storm.  Anyway, I had to take a picture of this, because it is something I look at just about every day.  And it makes me think.   I wonder how many pairs will end up there.  Who threw them up there?  And how long it will take for the laces to break.  They are just a funny thing, dangling out there in the wind amongst the power lines.  Weird.

29/365 Dinner

I've been battling a terrible cold this week, and I am pretty much useless today.  I'm sick of soup and tea... and just wanted a normal dinner.  So Andy made us burgers.  He even grilled onions ahead of time and put them on my burger!

He also tried Jennie's new "baked potato chips".  They turned out great.  He used our new mandolin to cut them nice and thin.  Then baked them in the oven at 400 for half an hour with a little sea salt.  Delish!

28/365 All packed up and nowhere to go...

We were hoping that we'd get a chance to visit a great cabin this weekend up in New Hampshire.  It is a special place we've visited that belongs to a friend of a friend's uncle.  They have only a solar panel for electricity.  Heat is from a wood stove.  And we have to melt water for cooking.  It is really awesome winter camping.  We were hoping we'd have the chance to go there, but found out at about 4:00 this afternoon that it just wasn't going to work out.  Bummer.

I guess all is well though, we'll figure out something fun to do this weekend.  And I'm coughing up a storm, so a little more rest will do me well.  Maybe we'll visit the cabin another day.

27/365 Sunlight

I am a person who loves light.  I am happiest in a room that is drenched with sunlight.  I was reminded this morning of my love of light when I woke up and walked into our dining room.  Warm rays of light were streaming into the room.  My plants were practically smiling.  I was smiling.

The light illuminated so many  things that I love and am thankful for.  One of which is my plants.  I love how they make it feel like home.

The light shone onto our book case that has only a few simple items on it.  This was not always the case.  One day this fall Jennie was over and helped us reorganize a bit.  Our book case was full of stuff.  And despite how I like to have stuff it was great to purge a little.

Now it has some candles (another source of light that I just love), Gramma's bowl  (a little piece of history), our cool new decanter, and our time capsules from our wedding. (History we look forward to!)

So these little bits of sunshine made me smile today.  And in a way are making me enjoy this snow day even more.  There is so much snow, we don't even know what to do with it.  Our neighbors have filled their front yard already.  It will be overflowing if we get another storm before it melts!  I think we have at least 2 feet of snow on the table in our back yard.  We've survived our 5th storm since the day after Christmas... and January isn't even over yet!

And as much as I love snow, I love the sunshine just as well.  A sunny day to you all!

26/354 As Laurie would say...

I'm trying to increase my veg intake... so I'm making roasted vegetables tonight.

Think I made enough?
And also.. what do you do with this much veg?
As Laurie would say... cheese makes it better!

So I did a layer of pasta... topped with a million veggies... and a bit of cheese to top it off!  I'd say that we've got 70% veg, 25% pasta, and 5% cheese... not a bad ratio.  I hope it tastes good.

25/365 Comfort Food

After waking up at 12:30 today, after coughing and blowing my nose all night... I was craving cream of wheat.  Mom used to always make it for me when I was little.  When I'm home sick, it is warm, and makes me feel better.  Mom, thanks for teaching me how to make it all those years ago.  Yum.  Stay warm everyone.

24/365 Matzo Ball Soup

Matzo Ball Soup... as Betsy would say... "Jewish Penicillin"

A few (okay... maybe more than a few... maybe 5) years ago Betsy was making Matzo Ball soup at our pizza night when she was feeling a little under the weather.  I tried it and loved it.  From now on whenever I have a cold, we make the soup.  It is hot, and warms your belly, and doesn't have ANY veg in it... (so that is nice cause who wants vegetables when you are sick?)  So yesterday when the sore throat started, I made the soup.  It was dinner last night, and lunch today.  I swear it is what got me through today.  So... off to take a nap, and sleep it off.  Thanks Betsy for a great home remedy!

23/365 Gadgets

I love kitchen gadgets.   We were lucky enough to get some great ones for our wedding.  The latest excitement in our kitchen is thanks to Jennie!  She gave us an egg timer.  Andy and I had soft-boiled eggs for breakfast today.  Neither of us had used one before.  So we stood fascinated over the boiling pot watching it work.  It is a simple idea.  Who knew how easy it would be to use!

We had a lovely breakfast.  Thanks Jennie!

More snowshoeing.  This time we ventured across the frozen reservoir.  Awesome day with awesome people.  Thank you to the great out doors!

21/365

Taking down the Christmas tree is always a sad day for me.  Andy and I managed to take our tree down last weekend.  Yet it still hasn't been picked up for disposal.  I hate that... disposal.  It seems that this time of year the streets of Somerville are a graveyard of Christmas trees.  It is a sad reminder to me that the Christmas season (my favorite!) is over.  And we have the new year ahead.  11 months til we get a new tree.

There are a few trees stuck into snowbanks on our street right now.  We've had so much snow lately that I'm pretty sure the priority is plowed streets, not Christmas Tree pickup.

Anyway, after this last storm from last night our tree, and the couple other trees on our street are covered delightfully in snow.  It is like a third little life for our tree.  Growing up on the farm, coming to our house, and now finding a little home in a snowbank of our street.

I've only left the house once today... it was a snowday.  I went down to our local gym The Training Room for a specially scheduled snow day spin class.  It is a very short little walk, maybe a block.  Along my little snowy walk I noticed the snow falling on our trees.  And it made me smile.

20/365 ice

Today on recess duty one of my former students came up to me and showed me this cool piece of ice.  She and a friend found it on the railing by the stairs.  Cool!

19/365 popcorn = fail

Snack to eat while watching a little t.v.  burned.  And most of the kernels didn't pop.  But that doesn't stop Andy from crunching away.

18/365

Giant Snowballs!!!  I was amazed and so were my students!  I wish that you could see better in the video how big the snowflakes were.  The size of snowballs, lacy and all stuck together.  Very cool.

The Irish Flag.... in trail markers.  We followed the orange trail yesterday.
Funny the little things you notice.

Snow Shoeing 15/365

We snow shoed at the Fells today.  Along "Molly Spring Road".  It was a beautiful day.

We saw this tree "eating" the no trespassing sign.  I wonder how many years it has been up there.

Journey BOMB 14/365 January 14, 2011

If you look closely in this picture, you can make out a small audience, and two performers playing the sax.  We were walking past this bar and stopped to listen.  We couldn't believe what we were hearing!  Don't Stop Believin!

This was in my opinion the ultimate Journey Bomb.

Andy has a love-hate relationship with Journey.  He hates their music.  But ever since Brandon, Jenn, and I sang "Don't Stop Believin" at The Tam years ago, we noticed that song is on all the time.  It is played at every wedding, cheesy bar, and often on the radio in places like target.

Andy said he felt like life was a mine field of "Journey Bombs".  You never know when you are going to step on one.  Or walk by one... on a cold January night played by a saxophone duo!

Best Journey Bomb Ever!  (It is still stuck in my head!)

"..... hold on to that feeeeelieeeing!"

The Dreaded Spin 13/365

It is the new year.  I am on Weight Watchers.  I am trying to work out a lot.

So the spin bike is my best friend and worst enemy.  I actually think it is closer to a friend who is a pain in the ass.  (Literally my gluts are killing me!)  I'm not so much a fan of the burning legs, the pouring sweat, or the damn seat.  And I really don't like the sprints.

But what I do love is when it's over!  I like the quiet music when we are stretching my sore muscles.  I like the walk down the stairs back to the locker room where my legs feel like jello.  (but they don't quite give out on me).  But most of all I like the feeling of accomplishment.

In my job (like many other people I'm sure) there is a constant list of things to do.  Always another paper to correct, always another lesson to plan, a parent to call.  When I spin... it is just me challenging myself to get through it.  And then I finish it.  And I'm done.  Accomplished.  Check it off the list.

SNOW!!! 12/365 January 12, 2011

Today was a blizzard!  We got lots of snow... at least a foot.  I spent the day shoveling, writing report cards, and walking around the city.  Rebecca and I walked though the streets of Somerville to see the winter wonderland.

It was quite a storm with very heavy wet snow.  There was lots of wind too.  We saw more than a few scenes like this:
There were several trees knocked over on cars.  I'm afraid there was probably some significant damage.  Despite seeing the damage to some cars, most people seemed pretty jovial.  I love walking around after a snow storm.  It is really when you get a chance to talk to your neighbors.  People in the city are 10 times more friendly when it snows.  Everyone is shoveling, avoiding the plows, and giving each other space to pass while walking on snow crowded sidewalks.  People actually smile.  People actually say hello.
Bec and I finished our walk by heading up to the Prospect Hill Monument.  It is actually where the first American flag ever flew.  It was dark by then and we had a beautiful view of the snowy city.  There were kids sledding down the steep steps of the monument.  We cringed as they slid down.  Expecting to hear cries of pain from broken legs being slammed into the wall, we heard shouts of laughter as the kids enjoyed every moment.

I hope you all enjoyed the snow as much as I did.

Marshmallow Mateys and Goodbyes 10/365

Tonight was the last official pizza night for a while.  It was the last one while the Gells are living in Massachusetts... and the last one for a month... since we are switching to monthly pizza.

Rebecca had an early evening meeting but made it a point to join us for Betsy and Jared's last pizza.  She brought gifts... and this is what she gave Andy.  Ah yes, the Marshmallow Mateys... otherwise known as the generic of Lucky Charms... and yes, they are magically delicious.

Eating Marshmallow Mateys after a morning run has become a tradition for Bec, Frank, Andy, and Ryan when he is in town.  They go for a run, and return to our house to eat the Mateys for breakfast while they watch some show named Archer.  I can't partake in this usually because I am on my way to work.  But I occasionally get a bowl of them.  And the sad thing is that they are both disgusting and delicious at the same time.  Probably better after a 5 mile run though.

On another note, I have to say how happy I am for Betsy and Jared.  They are off to an adventure of a new life with new jobs. They'll be living in Ridgefield, CT where Jared grew up.  I'm sure they will love it, and while we will miss them, we know that this is a good move for them.  (besides George will have a huge yard to run around in!)

It will be weird without the Gells in town.  But I'm sure we will see them for visits both in CT and MA.  We will miss you.

Good luck Jared and Betsy!

January 9, 2011 9/365 Funny Chalkboard

This chalkboard was outside Bukowski's the other night.  We thought it was funny!

January 8, 2011 8/365 Casserole Coozy

I have officially used my casserole coozy!  Mom's friend Cherry will be so happy!  We had brunch for Nicole and Andrew in honor of their baby who will be coming into this world very soon.  So I made a quiche and it was ready just as we went over to Jennie's.  The coozy came in very handy and kept it perfectly warm.

Thanks Cherry!

5th grade archaeology! 7/365

Today my students did an incredible project!  And thanks is not to me... it is to two parent volunteers in my classroom.  One is studying anthropology and the other should just be a teacher.  Today they came in and set up a grid for an archaeological dig in my classroom.  The kids "dug" up parts of these boats.

The ancient Egyptians actually did bury boats of Pharaohs.  (So did the Vikings.. Andy and I went to the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo!)  Anyway, they believed that the ships would take them to the afterlife.  And the book in the background shows the story of this true story of the dig!

The kids were amazed, and created such a wonderful product.  We are hoping to display them in the showcases in the front of our school!

I wish I could say that I was this creative... but I owe it all to parents of two of my students!

Hooray!

blood 6/365

Andy gave blood today.  This is a really amazing and wonderful thing.  He is donating blood at Children's Hospital in Boston.  He was asked to donate for a specific person (I presume kiddo) who has the same type blood.  Andy is A- and apparently not many people with that blood type are donating these days.

This is especially great because he is able to help someone live.  But also because he had donated to the Red Cross for years and years until he became black-listed.  One time when he and I were donating platelets he got a call from the Red Cross.  Apparently he had the bacteria that can cause a cavity in his blood.  Andy had no cavities, nor did he have any symptoms.  The blood he donated then was not able to be used, and he was (still is) not able to donate to the Red Cross ever again.

He checked with his doctor, and she explained that this bacteria was gone within a few weeks, and that his blood is perfectly fine to donate.  For a long time I was donating without him, and it was not fair that he couldn't donate.

I am so glad that he is donating blood again. I'm glad that places other than the Red Cross aren't as strict, and that he can again be helping people.  I need to call them up and donate some myself.

Oh Hawaii how I miss you! 5/365

So Hawaii has been on my mind lately.  First of all Andy got me this awesome retro print of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park for Christmas.  I have to say that it was one of the best places I've ever visited.
In the park we were able to hike the Kilauea Iki crater.  We found out about the park's lava conditions from the very friendly Ranger Don, then hiked down into the crater.  It was really incredible.  Andy and I thoroughly enjoyed the park.  You just can't beat national parks.  (We just recently dvr'd the National Parks documentary... it is amazing.  I'm so glad our country has preserved these beautiful places for everyone to see!)

The Big Island was one of my favorite parts of our Honeymoon.  It was so diverse.  It has something like 12 out of the 15 climate zones on earth.  We were on top of Mauna Kea one night (highest mountain in the world if you count the part that is underwater!)  and the next night we were on a boat watching lava pour into the ocean.

Our Hawaii trip came flooding back to me today because a student of mine is going this spring and her mom wanted advice for trip planning.  I almost advised her to pack me in their suitcase.  I really would LOVE to go back.

If you ever get the chance to go to Hawaii, the Big Island can't be missed!

New Year... New Growth 4/365

Smedley is growing a new branch!  It is great to see the new growth for the new year.  As mom would say, spring is around the corner!  (Although I'm excited for the snow in Friday's forecast.)

Smedley is a plant that has had many shoots of growth like this over the years.  He began as a plant in Andy's dad's college days.  All the guys that lived together took a cutting, and Smedley has spread presumably across the country.  We have three Smedleys in our house (one needs to head back to my classroom).  I know that Tom has a few as does Becky.  Andy's particular Smedley has birthed at least 5 new Smedleys in the time I've known Andy.

We know that Smedleys live in New York, Massachusetts, and New Mexico!  Who knows where he'll go next!
